Sleep like a baby, every day.
Best pillows 21 Premium Picks For Sound Snoozing In 2023
Why we love it:
  • If you run hot, are experiencing pregnancy flushes or are in the throes of the menopause, Technogel's cooling gel pillow will be the pick for you. With a medium-firm support at roughly H11 x W40 x D66cm, it's not the biggest pillow; however, with technology that's designed to react to your movement, it won't slip out from underneath you, even if you're a wriggly sleeper.

Pros: It's best for side sleepers and has multiple uses, with a soft snuggly cover for the colder months or, when the temperature amps up, why not use it without for the added benefit of the gel cubes. That said, the cover itself will still keep you cool, and the whole pillow features a patent-pending air-tunnel design to rival even the best wicking/breathable pillows. Plus, being designed to withstand years of use, the cooling gel is non-toxic and, some customers even remarked, can help to ease neck pain.

Cons: We can't fault it!

Customers are saying: Helps with neck tension and keeps you cool and comfortable.

GLAMOUR star rating: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cons: While it may cocoon your head for sleep apnoea sufferers, it can be a tad much for non-snorers.

Customers are saying: “Amazing” results, comfortable and even helps to improve their neck pain.

A Whole Night's Sleep Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow

  • Sleep trial? No, despite website branding of their 365-night trial, this doesn't apply to pillows
  • Hypoallergenic? Yes
Why we love it:
  • Not only is this a really good pillow - adjustable, infused with a gel memory foam core and topped in a breathable Tencel® cover for a soft, supportive and restful night’s sleep – but it has been developed in partnership with mental health movement #IAMWHOLE. This means that the campaign – aiming to target stigma around mental health – will receive a donation for every pillow sold.

8. Best place to buy pillows - Simba Sleep

THE SIMBA Hybrid® Pillow

  • The best hybrid pillow is Simba's Hybrid Pillow. Sure, it's £81.75 – but you get the quality you'd expect when spending that much money (and right now it actually costs less than usual).

Pros: Sleek in design, with a grey mesh panel that releases heat as you sleep and stylish branding, it's breathable and a GOD SEND in the summer. It's adjustable in its firmness. How? It's packed with dozens of nanofibre cubes, so you can simply unzip the pillow and remove a handful if you want something less “plump.”

Cons: If you're an extra-firm fanatic, then you may find that the pillow with the full nanocube foam filling in place is still too bouncy.

Customers are saying: Ideal for back sleepers, helps with neck pain and great for side sleepers with more petite shoulders, too.

GLAMOUR star rating: 4.25/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⚡️

  • Hypoallergenic? Non-allergenic (that's even better!)
Why we love it:
  • Designed for those who prefer a back sleep style and with a medium firmness level, this Slumberdown pillow pair features a polyester and microfibre pillow filling and, looking at its glowing pillow reviews (40+ four and five star ones, at that), it's somewhat of a bestseller.

Pros: It also provides enough neck support to serve as a side sleeper pillow, making it ideal for two types of sleeper among couples.

Cons: They're not quilted, so you won't find they have quite the same distribution of filling as, say, the Kally Adjustable Pillow.

Customers are saying: Not too warm for hot sleepers, with testers saying they still bounce back after a month or so.

  • Support level: Soft/medium
  • Cover material: 100% sustainably sourced cotton

  • Hypoallergenic? Yes
Why we love it:
  • Soft, squishy and with free delivery via. Amazon (+ Fenwick if you buy a pair of pillows and spend £50+), the Breathe pillows from The Fine Bedding Co. are not only hotel worthy - I've seen them in actual hotels - but they're reasonably priced and made from sustainably-sourced cotton, too.

Pros: With global recycling standard certified packaging, the aforementioned sustainable cotton and a recycled PET bottle filling, the Breathe pillows are a top pick for the environment.

Cons: We can't flaw it!

Customers are saying: One buyer remarked that they loved them so much in their holiday rental that they came home and ordered them new in for their bedroom, too.

GLAMOUR tested review: I've been using these pillows for around a month now and, as someone who keeps their electric blanket on full whack through the night, having a pillow that keeps your body temperature balanced has been a Godsend. Plump and bouncy, they feel like being cradled by a snuggly panda bear through the night - what more could a girl want?

  • Machine washable? Yes
  • Sleep trial? No

Why we love it:
  • One of the best pillows for keeping its shape over time, the hugely popular Casper pillow is crafted from multiple layers. Hence the incredible quality.

Pros: The inner pillow gives you all the support you need for your upper body; it's slightly chunkier and made from countless fibres to adapt to your movements. Outside of that, there's an outer pillow which is soft and fluffy, to make you believe (kinda) you're sleeping on a cloud. Everything is wrapped in a super soft outer, made from a breathable percale weave which does a good job at keeping you cool.

Cons: Perhaps too chunky for side sleepers with a smaller frame.

Customers are saying: Great distribution of filling and equal parts soft and firm for the ultimate support.

Cons: No trial period or returns accepted once opened.

Customers are saying: You get what you pay for, they stay plump and are the perfect ratio of supportive to comfy like a softer pillow.

GLAMOUR star rating: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Cover material: 55% polyester, 45% viscose from bamboo

Pros: The soft casing can be unzipped and machine washed at 40°C, making it super easy to care for.

Cons: Quite a heavy pick, not as ideal for petite women.

Customers are saying: Only need one for ample firmness and is high-quality and comfortable.

GLAMOUR star rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

17. Best hotel pillows: Soak & Sleep pillows

Hungarian Goose Down Pillows

Specifications:
  • Type: Feather and down
  • Support level: Your choice of soft-medium or medium-firm

  • Machine washable? Yes
  • Sleep trial? No
  • Hypoallergenic? ‘Allergy friendly’ - a rare find for down pillows

Pros: It's made of duck feathers – 90pc feather and 10pc down – which keeps it springy and stops it from clumping as it would with a higher down percentage. This pillow is five-star quality. Oh, and it's suitable for allergy sufferers.

Cons: Brand recommends you air the pillows each day without the cover on top of them to prevent any unpleasant odours.

Customers are saying: Comfortable, luxurious and physiotherapist recommended.

18. Best bed pillows

Floks Luxury British Wool Pillow

Specifications:
  • Type: Wool
  • Support level: Medium
  • Cover material: Organic cotton
  • Machine washable? No, dry clean only
  • Sleep trial? No
  • Hypoallergenic? Anti-allergy + antibacterial protection
Why we love it:
  • In terms of sustainability after your pillow reaches the end of its life cycle, wool is a more eco-conscious choice (compared to synthetic materials) and biodegrades with the same ease as, say, human hair. Plus, with regard to its comfort as a head support, it's super cushy.

Pros: This pillow is sweat wicking, temperature regulating and suitable for all types of sleepers.

Cons: You'll need to plump it regularly to maintain its shape.

Customers are saying: No complaints from buyers, five-star reviews all round.

GLAMOUR tested review: I've tried latex pillows, I've tried down pillows - reader, quite frankly I've tried them all and I'm now a wool pillow convert. Previously, my plump, fresh-out-the-box pillows would deflate in a matter of weeks. Not these. I've been using them for several months now and, as someone who rustles around a lot, I can confidently say they've been put through the ringer. Fast forward through countless night's sleep and my Floks pillows look fresh as the day they arrived.

GLAMOUR star rating: 4.75/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

19. Best down alternative pillows

John Lewis & Partners Synthetic Soft Like Down Standard Pillow, Medium/Firm

Specifications:
  • Type: Synthetic/polyester
  • Support level: Medium/firm
  • Cover material: 100% Cotton
  • Machine washable? Yes
  • Sleep trial? No
  • Hypoallergenic? Not mentioned, but the brand does recommend washing at 40°C to kill dust mites
Why we love it:
  • This synthetic pillow has the luxurious feel of down but without the price tag – and without the animal product. So, if you're a vegan after a pillow that feels super soft and squishy but doesn't contain real feathers, you're in luck.

Pros: Inside, each fibre has a '10 hole' hollowfibre construction which helps air to circulate and gives a lovely, lofty feel. It's lightweight and covered in a cotton cashing which feels soft against the skin.

Cons: Could be better in terms of filling distribution.

Customers are saying: Fluffs like new each morning, feels like sleeping on a cloud but is perhaps a tad softer than medium-firm.

GLAMOUR star rating: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

20. Best pillows on Amazon: best wool pillows

WOOLROOM Chatsworth Natural Supportive British Wool Pillow

Specifications:
  • Type: Wool
  • Support level: Adjustable - just rearrange the wool fibres to your liking
  • Cover material: Organic cotton
  • Machine washable? Yes, on a wool cycle
  • Sleep trial? No
  • Hypoallergenic? Yes
Why we love it:
  • These pillows of medium-hard firmness are made of wool: a surprisingly good middle ground between soft down pillows and slightly firmer microfibre pillows.

Pros: They're customisable (you can adjust how firm and dense they are by reaching inside and tearing apart the wool fibres with your hands), but they're also soft and supportive. You can wash the entire thing at the same time – lining and outer including – and rumour has it this is the only pillow to hold the Allergy UK Seal of Approval.

Cons: Does have a faint odour to begin with.

Customers are saying: As comfortable as feather pillows and helps with overheating.

How often should you change your pillows?

According to sleep experts, you should change your pillows once every two years – in sharp contrast to the 3.2 years most Brits hang onto their pillows for. Sleeping on a pillow which has gone flat from too many Zzz's could also be putting unnecessary strain on your neck.

What are the different types of pillow?

Generally speaking, there are four different types of pillow to consider.

  • Cotton pillows – like the John Lewis Natural Cotton Standard Pillows – are your most basic pillow: affordable and popular. While they're not the most durable, absorbing heat and flattening out quite quickly in comparison to other pillow types, they work well in a spare room or for use on your sofa bed.
  • Feather pillows or down feather pillows – despite not being vegan – are more luxurious than cotton pillows: squashy, expensive-feeling and comfortable. If you're wondering what pillows hotels use, this is probably your answer. Usually made my duck or goose feathers, they contain a mix of high-quality down feathers – the fluffier feather from the underneath layer of a bird's coat. Their downside? You have to plump your pillows everyday to help them keep their shape – but if you can afford to invest, do.

The Marlowe Goose Down Pillow

Luxury Hungarian Goose Down Pillow

TEMPUR® Original Pillow Medium

A Whole Night's Sleep Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow

  • Microfibre pillows aim to serve up all the supreme features of other pillows types, rolled into one. They're the most expensive kind of pillow: soft and fluffy and able to keep cool throughout the night.

Emma Premium Microfibre Pillow

What is the healthiest type of pillow?

General consensus, according to the likes of experts - including the Sleep Foundation and WebMD - is that the more natural the material, the more suitable the pillow's makeup will be for year-round use. For instance, wool and cotton fill pillows are naturally hypoallergenic and more mould resistant, whereas synthetic pillows will often require an anti-bacterial treatment during the manufacturing process in order to mimic the same qualities.

How thick a pillow/how many pillows should I have?

“Over 70% of people in the UK sleep on their side, and if you are one of these sleepers you will need a firm, supportive pillow for side sleepers. Your neck is always going to be happier when it is kept fairly straight, so as a side sleeper, the distance from your head to the mattress is going to be far greater than if you sleep on your back or your front.

“Our experts will almost always recommend a soft and fairly slim pillow for stomach sleepers, whereas those who sleep on their back can have a preference for several different levels of support and thickness.”

How did we test and review the best pillows?

By using product reviews from customers combined with data on what you've been searching for, as well as checking thoroughly to see which products feature high-quality versus less durable materials (e.g. higher vs lower loft pillows), we curated what we feel is a selection of the best pillows for sleeping on the market for year-round use. We've rifled through the good and bad comments, so you don't have to, not to mention we - as a team of fashion, interiors and beauty experts - happen to know a thing or two about which brands have earned their respective places as the best in the business. Plus, with a team of 30+ here at GLAMOUR HQ, of course some of us have trialled a sateen, goose down or anti-allergy pillow here and there, so we have some dos and don't knowhow, too. Our aim is to find you pieces which will last and, should anything about a product signal that that's not the case, you'll be the first to know - happy shopping!

How does the GLAMOUR star rating system work?

1/5 - Not a rating you're likely to see in our buying guides, as we aim to pull together a round up of only the upper cut of pillow. That said, a 1/5 score would mean the pillows fails on value for money, quality, performance and how consumers reviewed it. All fronts, essentially.
2/5 - Again, not likely to be included in our round ups, a 2/5 would mean the product is disappointing in most areas, perhaps being passable in one field e.g. value for money.
3/5 - A 3/5 would mean the product is ok, maybe a fine choice if you have less disposable income to play with, but leaves room for improvement. For instance, this could be a pillow that is comfy for back sleepers, but wouldn't work for side and front sleepers and, also, won't last longer than a couple of years.
4/5 - A 4/5 would mean the pillow is near perfect, with problems only minimal. For instance, a pillow that ticks all the boxes, but isn't machine washable.
5/5 - A 5/5 rating means the product, website and company are all perfect. We will never give a pillow - or other product for that matter - a five-star rating if it has a single fault that we know of, so keep your eyes peeled for these, they're rare (read: we're picky).
