The jawbone bob is like contour in a haircut

Fancy a fresh chop? One cut we've fallen hard for is the jawbone bob that Hailey Bieber and Ciara have been killing recently. The last couple of years have seen longer length styles like the Shag and The Rachel take off, but if you're itching for a change, you've timed it perfectly, because the bob is making a swift (and very stylish) return to re-recruit the girls who like a cropped shape.

As for choosing the specific length, the jawbone bob is perfect since it's short and statement, but it's not too short (you could still chuck it in a dinky pony or button bun). It's sexy, it's shoulder baring, but it's super cute, too. Hitched higher with a couple of extra inches skimmed off, it's ideal for warm weather when you want a bit of breeze round your neckline.

And, you don't even have to go there in one hit. The style's latest adopter, Hailey, first chopped her chest-length hair into a chin-length bob in January. And after letting it grow a little to a longer, flickier neck length over spring, it looks as though she's trimmed it back up to her jawbone for summer.

Likewise, hair chameleon, Ciara, doesn't stay wedded to one style for long, but she's returned to a jawbone length on repeat this year.

The beauty is, even within the one length, there's versatility to be had. It works beautifully if the edge is cut clean, crisp and softly blunt. Or you can wear it a little shattered and mussy.

Likewise with styling, you can lean into your natural texture, smooth it straight, wave it or add a bit of nineties bounce with a curved, blow-dry.

You can keep the ends all one length, or add a little movement and volume with super subtle layers.

Be warned, to keep that shape looking super fresh though, you will need to commit to some upkeep. “To keep this uber cool style up, you have to keep on top of your regular trims and shape-ups as once it grows out you will really notice it and the hair can tend to flick out and become unruly,” explains Dom Seeley, top celebrity hair stylist and International Creative Director of ColorWow hair. “This is the key indicator that you're ready for the shape and length to be recut.”

It can work on most textures, but you'll need to tweak it so it works best for you. “Straight-to-wavy hair requires minimal effort and you can go for a lived in French-girl esque shape where the majority of the hard work is done for you,” says Dom. “Curly textured hair needs working into shape for it to lay and sit right at the jawbone,” says Dom, so a curl-by-curl cut can work beautifully.

As for the shape, “a one length jawbone bob is a statement and you have to wear it with confidence so the style doesn't wear you,” says Dom. Or to make it a little more gentle, Dom recommends introducing lightweight layers or soft fringes. “Think ‘70s or ’90s for inspo,” he says. “Either wispy and flicked out (like the ‘70s) or layered and flipped over (like the ’90s). These are the main hair trend decade revivals we're seeing, so the same applies when you're styling your jawbone bob.”

Remember, you can always apply a little tailoring. “Ask your stylist to work with your face shape and tell them your personal style, what you wear and how your lifestyle plays out. This will help your stylist choose a shape that works for you personally, that's still within the jawbone bob camp. It might need texture, it may need to be blunt, you may need a fringe or layers to open up your face,” Dom says. He recommends attending your salon appointment with your hair in its natural texture, “that way your stylist can see how your hair is behaving without the help of heat, tools and products, and they can see the natural patterns of growth. Overall, this will help them create the perfect jawbone length crop for you,” he says.

As for styling, “it's totally your call,” says Dom. You could wear it natural and air-dried in the day time. If so, “use products to aid in the style and hold the natural wave patterns so it dries into the desired shape,” says Dom. “Then save your heated tools for your nights out, dinners and date nights,” says Dom. “I always say any texture is great texture so add volume or waves and flip over your parting to play around and have fun." His trick to keep waves feeling modern is to alternate direction to help them feeling more lived in.

And, to make a slick statement, “nothing will beat a smooth, straight incredibly shiny bob that has that weight and swoosh we all love,” he says. “Smooth hair through with a flat iron or a smooth blowout to lock into place.” For a '90s blow-dried finish with supermodel volume, “get creative with your hair dryer and use rollers to set a full blowout,” says Dom. Dom recommends ColorWow's Extra Mist-ical shine spray for both. “It will impart an incredible lightweight shine and also protect from heat, so it's great to use with heated styling tools and as a finishing product to give glass like shine,” he says.

And the finishing touch is a beautiful hair colour. “I love a chunky face-frame as it can add dimension and softness if a one length shape feels too strong,” recommends Dom. “Its a modern way to keep it chic but low maintenance if you don't want to commit to a full colour.” Beyond tactical highlights, play around with summer tones. Barbie blonde is big right now, as is candlelit brunette. Or for something a little more daring, warm peaches, coppers and cherry cola are trending.
